What is a Notary Public

​In Ontario, a notary public is a person who is appointed by the provincial government to serve the public as an impartial witness when important documents are signed or oaths are recited. The Notaries Act provides lawyers with the privilege of becoming a notary public by applying, paying a one-time fee and obtaining a personal seal embosser.

Please note that we are unable to notarize documents that are written in a language other than English and French.

Although there is no central listing of individuals who have been appointed as notaries public, look for a "Certificate of Appointment under the Notaries Act" as proof that an individuals is, indeed, a notary public. Notary public is often mis-spelled "notory public", "notarie public", "notery public", "public notary", "notary republic", "nota republic", etc.
